REGULAR MEETING
JANUARY 14, 2008
Workshop:
Council discussed agenda items. Also, discussed county Hospitality Tax, First Baptist Church’s parking situation, parking spaces on Highway 11 and Alabama Avenue, fencing for back and inmates for sidewalk cleaning.
Regular Meeting:
In attendance: All Council, several visitors, Andrew with Cable, David from Tribune.
Mayor Pro tem Johnson called the meeting to order.
Pastor Kite from Cooley Springs Church led in the group in the Lord’s Prayer.
Mayor Pro tem Johnson welcomed the group to the meeting.
Councilwoman Brannon made a motion to approve the minutes with the amendment to add $60. more for the Boy Scouts; Councilwoman Dawkins second. Unanimous.
Garnette Vara with Planning Commission asked Council about the decision to repair the gazebo. Mayor Pro tem Johnson stated that vinyl would be a better choice than wood because of maintenance involved.
Vertie Crawford with Kops Kids stated that 150 children (52 families) had been helped with the Kops Kids Project this year. She thanked the volunteers for all their help.
Each Council person expressed their thanks to Vertie and all who had helped with Kops Kids and other programs this year.
Ben Dodd, Victims Advocate gave his report, stating that four victims had been assisted during December.
Mayor Pro tem Johnson asked Tom Cantrell to come to the podium, and presented him with a plaque honoring the late Mayor Priscilla M. Cantrell. He unveiled the plaque on the front of the podium and asked Pastor Kite to lead a prayer to dedicate the Council chambers in memory and honor of Priscilla. The Council chambers will now be called the Priscilla M. Cantrell Council Chambers.
Chief Scott Smith gave the Police report, introducing the two new officers hired: Brent Yelton and Joey Good. He asked permission from Council to sell the ambulance by sealed bid and trade the two Intrepids for radars and blue lights. He asked to keep the Impala until the officers are certified, giving them something to drive back and forth to the academy.
Councilman Mahaffey made the motion to go into executive session to discuss police policies and procedures with Chief Smith; Councilwoman Brannon second. Unanimous.
Councilwoman Dawkins made the motion to come out of executive session and go back into regular session; Councilwoman Brannon second. Unanimous.
Councilwoman Dawkins made the motion to allow Chief Smith to trade the Intrepids for the radar and lights and to purchase the computer system "Law Track"; Councilwoman Brannon second. Unanimous.
Councilman Mahaffey made the motion to allow the Chief to sell the ambulance by sealed bids; Councilwoman Brannon second. Unanimous.
Councilman Mahaffey made the motion to adjourn; Councilwoman Dawkins second. Unanimous.
